How & why goats?

What makes goats so special when we talk about clearing and controlling invasives? It’s an eco-friendly alternative to using chemicals, goats don’t reseed what they eat, they provide a natural fertilizer, and they can get into hard-to-reach areas for mechanical removal.

Goats are ruminants. They are known as browsers where cattle are known as grazers (grass diet). They have 4 stomachs which allows them to break down and digest hays, grasses and plants that are high in fiber. Therefore, when they forage on plants like buckthorn, phragmites, poison ivy and willow, they aren’t spreading seeds through their feces.

An additional benefit if goat feces have higher nitrogen levels, which is a key component of chlorophyll. Goat manure improves soil textures which creates a healthy environment for root systems and aids in water retention.

Another key element in using goats, is they can get into areas that are hard to reach for people and machines.

It’s important to understand the process of using goats isn’t a one- time occurrence. It takes running the goats in the same area over a 3-5 year period to eliminate the invasives that are suffocating the native plants. In cases where plants have turned to trees, we do use mechanical equipment for tree removal.

We have an incredible team to aid you eliminate and recreate a native filled environment.
